Alcatel's multi-service systems to deliver converged voice and data services in the Baltics
Paris, May 29, 2002 - Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE : ALA), the world leader in optical networking, today announced the signature of a contract with Televőrgu AS, a provider of broadband infrastructure and services in Estonia and a subsidiary of Eesti Energia, the leading power utility in the country, to deploy Televőrgu's nationwide transmission network. Based on Alcatel's Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) multi-service node systems, Televőrgu's backbone will create a highly competitive transport architecture delivering multimedia services to Estonia's business and residential users.
Alcatel's SDH systems operating at 2.5Gbit/s will link 26 different sites in Estonia's major cities. Their deployment will enable Televőrgu to expand its offering from traditional voice services to broadband services, such as fast Internet and business applications. Addressing the transmission requirements of Televőrgu's national backbone, the equipment supplied provides advanced networking features in terms of network capacity, protection and manageability.
"Alcatel's technology and feature-rich compact systems will give Televőrgu access to a best-of-class transmission platform, which reinforces our competitive advantage in the newly liberalized Estonian telecommunications market" said Urmas Aiaste, CEO of Televőrgu. "This future-proof transport network will provide Televőrgu's residential and business end-users with greatly enhanced voice and data communication offerings".
"We are pleased to support this backbone build-out, which will further expand Televőrgu's penetration in the country and Internet-based service delivery", stated Jean-Marie Vansteenkiste - President of Alcatel's terrestrial networks activities "This award underscores Alcatel's ability to rapidly understand its customers' tailored requirements and consolidates our position in the Baltics".
About Alcatel's Optical Multi-Service Nodes (OMSN)
Designed for both metro and core applications, Alcatel's Optical Multi-Service Nodes provide world-class next-generation SDH functionality and capacity through aggregation of broadband multi-protocol traffic patterns. Their deployment allows operators of optical transport networks to achieve the optimal balance between new competitive service offerings and traditional revenue-generating services by introducing a wide variety of data managed services - including top-level differentiated QoS capabilities, variable service rates and traffic congestion management. Supporting STM-4c, STM-16c and STM-64c concatenated payloads, OMSNs deliver integrated ATM switching, IP/MPLS routing capabilities, as well as LAN interfaces (Ethernet, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet) by integrating ISA plug-in modules. Although configurable as ADMs (Add-Drop-Multiplexers), OMSNs have full cross-connect capability thanks to their symmetrical and scalable architecture. OMSNs are flexible for use in all network topologies - i.e.: point-to-point, linear chains, multiple rings, meshed networks - and ensure complete synergistic use of hardware items across the systems, from common parts to traffic ports. Additionally, they all have fully non-blocking SDH matrices (HO/LO) and support all standard PDH interfaces.
About Televőrgu AS
Eesti Energia AS was established as a joint stock company in April 1998 on the basis of the former state enterprise founded in 1939. The Estonian Government owns 100% of shares.. Televőrgu AS was established in April 1st, 2001, on the basis of telecommunication department of Estonian Power Utilities to take advantage of opportunities the deregulation of Estonian telecommunication market offers. With its 70 towers and over 1100-km long fiber optical backbone network Televőrgu AS will be a high-level provider of broadband infrastructure and services in domestic and international markets.
