Alcatel endorses the 2nd World Summit of Cities and Local Authorities to promote the Information Society

Paris, November 9, 2005 - Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) announces its participation in the 2nd World Summit of Cities and Local Authorities on the Information Society, a UNITAR (United Nations Institute for Training and Research) and Basque Government initiative, that will be held in Bilbao, Spain, November 9-11, 2005.

In Bilbao, Alcatel will present 16 projects implemented for public administrations and local authorities. These projects demonstrate how Alcatel enables local authorities to build the digital society, by stimulating economic development, providing innovative services for all, bridging the digital divide, and enhancing administration efficiency in areas such as e-government, e-health or e-education.

In the e-government domain, UK's Trafford City Council migrated to an Alcatel IP voice, video and data converged network linking 250 schools, hospitals, libraries, administration premises, etc. This network enables the city to cut in half its telephony costs and benefit from new e-government applications, like video-conferencing, consolidated call center or wireless connectivity for council officers.

In the e-health domain, Italy's Montedomini and San Silvestro Service Center of Florence has implemented an innovative remote medical assistance and monitoring service for elderly people using an ADSL network and based on Alcatel's Genesys video call center solution, connecting up to 2500 patients. This results in better assistance and cost savings on home care or hospitalization.

Alcatel' s case studies will also illustrate new ways to bring economic, social and digital development to communities and regions, with local authorities playing the role of carrier's carrier. The Principality of Asturias in Spain has trusted Alcatel to deliver a turnkey FTTU network to foster economic development in the mining valleys of the region with a broadband infrastructure shared by several operators.

Alcatel is UNITAR's partner and in 2005 sponsored e-government workshops in China, Poland and South Africa, for local authorities to foster best practices and share technical expertise in information technologies.

Alcatel will also be a key partner at the World Summit on the Information Society to be held November 15-18 2005 in Tunis.
