Paris, February 16, 2005 – Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today announced its data and optical transport platforms will participate in a public, multi-vendor interoperability showcase demonstrating the scalability, flexibility and manageability of Layer 2 MPLS*-based Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Participating vendors will demonstrate the interoperability of MPLS-based Quality of Service (QoS) and OA&M (Operations, Administration and Maintenance) capabilities, and for the first time, hierarchical Virtual Private LAN Service (H-VPLS) -- proving end-to-end VPN services in a multi-vendor environment are ready for large scale deployment.
The showcase takes place during the MPLS World Congress in Paris, Feb 15-18, and is organized by the European Advanced Networking Test Center (EANTC). Ten MPLS & Frame Relay Alliance (MFA) members will participate. Alcatel will demonstrate multi-vendor interoperability on the Alcatel 7750 Service Router (SR), Alcatel 7670 Routing Switch Platform (RSP) and Alcatel 1662 Packet Ring Switch (PRS). The 7750 SR will show H-VPLS and multi-dimensional scaling at the new multiservice provider edge, the 7670 RSP will show MPLS label switch routing for VPNs and pseudowires and the 1662 PRS will show Layer 2 Ethernet VPNs, H-VPLS and its ability to belong to an MPLS edge network.
Alcatel is an active participant in standards bodies and industry forums related to VPLS standardization, such as the IETF, MEF and MFA. Alcatel's Vach Kompella co-chairs the Layer 2 VPN Working Group within the IETF and is co-author of the VPLS standard, and Alcatel's Sunil Khandekar was the the author of the original H-VPLS draft which provides scalability improvements to VPLS.
"This level of interoperability between vendors proves scalable, flexible and manageable MPLS-based services, like VPLS, are ready for large scale commercial deployments," said Michel Rahier, chief operating officer of Alcatel's fixed communication activities. "Alcatel is a global leader in VPLS, having already worked with multiple service providers around the world who are rolling out VPLS services to customers on a global basis."
Alcatel's VPLS solutions have been tested and deployed in numerous production networks and provide industry–leading performance and reliability (up to 400Gbps wire rate). Combined with the most comprehensive set of IP/MPLS services and policies, and well as operation, management, and troubleshooting tools, Alcatel's VPLS solutions allow the delivery of rich, high-SLA managed data, video and voice services.
Several Alcatel executives will deliver tutorials and seminars during the MPLS World Congress including the conference's opening address on February 16 by Kevin Macaluso, vice president of Alcatel's IP activities.
The Alcatel 7750 SR, Alcatel 7670 RSP, Alcatel 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM) and the Alcatel 1662 PRS will be featured in Alcatel's booth #103 on the MPLS World Congress show floor and in the MFA interoperability demonstration.

*MPLS – multiprotocol label switching
VPLS is a metro, national and global Ethernet service that extends a customer's local area network (LAN) to multiple locations by providing fully-meshed Layer 2 multipoint connectivity. For service providers, VPLS leverages MPLS to enable a scalable, reliable and operationally efficient solution. For enterprises, VPLS leverages Ethernet to deliver a simple and cost-effective multipoint service with QoS support for different traffic types.
