MPLS 2004, Washington, D.C. - Oct 18, 2004 - Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today announced its participation in the industry's first live inter-AS (Autonomous System) Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) at MPLS 2004 (October 17-19) in Washington, DC. The VPLS network, in part powered by the Alcatel 7750 Service Router (SR) and delivered in conjunction with conference host Isocore and service provider BtNAccess, gives conference attendees access to the Internet as well as a host of other broadband services, such as live video streaming to view the conference proceedings.
The first live inter-AS VPLS network is providing connectivity to users located within networks controlled by multiple providers. Connecting these autonomous systems will allow service providers to offer guaranteed, end-to-end Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with Quality of Service (QoS) even when the services are beyond the control of their domain.
"Service providers are moving to introduce VPLS in their networks because it is an attractive alternative as a Layer 2 VPN in their service mix," said Basil Alwan, president of Alcatel's IP activities. "Alcatel has taken a leadership position in the VPLS standard's development process and participating in this premier event further strengthens our leadership role as we continue to work with customers to roll out this service rich, user-centric VPN offering."
VPLS is a metro, national and global Ethernet service, extending a customer's local area network (LAN) to multiple locations by providing fully-meshed Layer 2 multipoint connectivity. With VPLS in the mix, service providers are able to deliver VPN services based on Ethernet with the same level of support and reliability as existing services such as frame relay and ATM. VPLS enables service providers to strengthen their service mix with a carrier class VPN service that supports detailed, application-specific service level agreements.
The Alcatel 7750 SR will also participate in Isocore's fifth public multi-vendor interoperability test in an IP/MPLS network environment. The interoperability demonstration will show a range of layer two and layer three VPN services over a multi-vendor, QoS-capable IP/MPLS network with fast failover for improved reliability and OAM tools for reduced OPEX.
