Paris, April 26, 2005 - Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today announced that it has successfully delivered the communications solution for the extension of Cairo's metro line 2 in Egypt. The metro line - which was inaugurated in the presence of the Egyptian Prime Minister, Ahmed Nazif - has been extended by 2.6 km southwards, and now reaches El Mounib, an important crossroad in High Egypt. Approximately 180,000 new passengers can now be accommodated, bringing the total number of passengers on line 2 to 1.5 million per day.
Alcatel, as a member of the Interinfra consortium, delivered the communications solution on a turnkey basis, managing all relevant phases from design to deployment, installation, commissioning and maintenance.
The solution manages critical services such as train-to-ground communications, safety and security, and information to the public along the stations and inside the trains. The line and stations have been equipped with state-of-the-art subsystems, including transmission, telephone and radio communications networks, closed-circuit TV, a fire detection subsystem, and a public address subsystem.
From a single control center, operators can monitor train traffic and equipment along the line, communicate with the drivers via radio, and manage passenger information. Alcatel also provided the transport network, enabling communications from the central unit to the stations and among the stations. In addition, a workshop that is used to repair trains has been equipped with a telecommunications solution, and an inspection pit system has been provided to enable the early detection of problems on the line.
"Alcatel deployed the communications system of the first phase of line 2, which was inaugurated in October 1996. With this extension, the line now covers 21.6 km, with 20 stations and 35 trains running," said Frederic Rose, President of Alcatel's Integration and Services activities. "We are proud of the successful completion of this project, which positions Alcatel as a long-term partner for the metro in Egypt."
