Alcatel and BCL extend broadband across New Zealand

Paris, April 4, 2005 - Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today announced it has completed the deployment of an IP service routing solution for Broadcast Communications Limited (BCL), New Zealand's wholesale wireless solutions provider. The project enables BCL customers, such as New Zealand's telecom service providers, to deliver a range of new IP-based voice and data services to areas that previously did not have access to broadband.

BCL has rolled out a unique high-speed broadband solution based on the Alcatel 7750 Service Router (SR) and helped local service providers offer advanced, quality services such as wireless video conferencing and high-speed internet access to rural and provincial communities. The solution meets BCL's key technical requirements for bandwidth management, billing record generation, and integration with existing reporting and element management systems. It is a future-proof solution that scales easily, allowing BCL to keep pace with customer demand for new enhanced broadband services.

"The Alcatel service routing solution enables us to enrich our existing powerful infrastructure and deliver advanced services to our retail service provider customers," said BCL Managing Director Geoff Lawson. "The solution also provides a strong market advantage to BCL, which supports our vision of becoming a significant player in the telecommunications market by focusing on wholesale broadband business opportunities."

The Alcatel 7750 SR is the industry's first IP/MPLS router designed and optimized for the delivery of scalable and profitable advanced IP-based services. Its unique hierarchical quality of service capabilities mean that BCL can differentiate the traffic it carries, guaranteeing varying classes of service levels, without the need for excess bandwidth. This decreases the cost of delivering service level agreement-based services, maximizes network utilization and enables BCL to offer differentiated, value-based pricing to its customers.

"The Alcatel IP service routing solution is perfectly aligned with BCL's real world business requirements to deliver advanced services in a timely, cost effective and profitable manner," said Basil Alwan, president of Alcatel's IP activities. "We are confident that our solution will integrate well with BCL's existing and planned network assets, supporting BCL as it further strengthens its market position."
