Paris, December 15, 2004 - Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA; NYSE: ALA) today announced that it has been awarded a multi-million Euro contract to design and deploy a state-of-the-art and fully integrated communication solution for the new driverless metro in Brescia, in the northern region of Italy. The completion of the driverless metro system, serving 17 stations and running up to 18 trains on more than 14 km, is foreseen by 2011.
The project covers all the communication needs of an advanced, fully automated transportation system. Alcatel will have the overall responsibility of the design, integration, test and commissioning services, as well as for the supervision of the installation of the entire system.
The IP based Alcatel's solution encompasses a fast Ethernet (Gigabit Ethernet) network, the Alcatel OmniSwitch 7700, tetra radio system, passenger security and information systems, an intelligent on-board communication system as well as the Alcatel OmniPCX Enterprise IP communication server, with IP gateways to connect the 17 stations along the tracks. The Alcatel Metro Operation System (AMOS), a user-friendly integrated management and operation system, will also be provided. AMOS is a dedicated software platform, which allows operators in the control center to monitor and operate in real time passenger security and information systems in a centralized and coordinated way. It enables interoperability between the various managed sub-systems.
This contract was awarded by Ansaldo Transporti Sistemi Ferroviari (ATSF), a subsidiary of Finmeccanica. ATSF is prime contractor for the electromechanical infrastructure and the rolling stock parts of the transportation system ordered by the Municipality of Brescia.
Frederic Rose, President of Alcatel's Integration and Service activities, said: "Alcatel's integrated communication solution is designed to ensure passenger information, security and comfort." He added: "With this contract, we will prove again our ability to provide rail operators with innovative solutions responding to their needs, from conceptual design to turnkey delivery. We are happy to cooperate again with ATSF for this challenging project."
