Paris, February 24, 2005 - Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today announced that it has been awarded a 9,8 million Euro contract by the Shanghai government to provide an integrated communications solution for Shanghai's new No. 9 metro line. This metro line, which is expected to be fully operational by 2009, is 31 kilometers long and covers 12 stations from SongJiang to YiShan Road.
Alcatel's communications solution will ensure efficient management of the metro line and reliable services for passengers. Alcatel will have overall responsibility for the design, deployment, integration, testing, and commissioning services, as well as the full project management and maintenance of the entire system.
To enable efficient communications exchanges among the 12 stations, Alcatel will deploy an optical transport network based on its Optical Multi-Service Node (OMSN) equipment and an access network based on the time division multiplexing (TDM) 151x portfolio. The Alcatel's communications solution will also comprise administrative telephony service, operational telephony services, closed-circuit TV (CCTV), a centralized display system, office automation, optical fiber and copper cables, repeater and leaky cables, police and fire-protection radio systems, power supply, public address system, lightning-proofing and a central clock distribution.
Frederic Rose, President of Alcatel's integration and services activities, noted: "This project is our largest communications contract to date for the metro in China. We were selected because of our ability to provide local service with global support. It is this ability, combined with Alcatel's integration expertise and industry-proven solutions, that enables us to meet the needs of customers in China's transportation market."
With this contract, Alcatel strengthens its position as one of the leading telecommunications solutions providers in China for urban and main line rail operators.
